Tracing Tracing the Greaves
My grandmother's sister, Gertrude Greaves, left various records which were compiled into a tree by her daughter, Gert Milner, going back 3 or 4 generations. Milner notes
This was my starting point for tracing the Greaves - at the start, mostly an exercise in confirming this information.

PP_10 That Edward Greaves (10) was the father of Helen Myra Greaves (5)
My descent from my grandmother Helen Myra Greaves is confirmed by more than one DNA match with descendants of her siblings Frederick and Constance Mary Greaves. DNA
Helen Myra Greaves daughter of Edward Greaves and Myra formerly Frost was born on 19 August 1885 in Bradford. Birth
Edward Greaves and Myra had 5 children between 1884 and 1892, including Helen Myra Greaves in 1885.
Edward Greaves and Myra Frost married in 1883 in Bradford, when her age was given as 'full'. Marriage
Edward Greaves is listed in the 1891 census aged 46 and born (c. 1844) in Harrogate, Yorkshire. Census
Edward Greaves died intestate in 1910. Death
Edward Greaves son of John Greaves and Catherine formerly Robinson was born on 1 February 1845 in Harrogate. Birth
My descent from Edward Greaves is confirmed by at least 2 DNA matches averaging about 68cM with descendants of his siblings James Henry and Samuel Greaves, and at least 7 matches averaging about 42cm of all descendants of Edward with all descendants of those siblings. DNA
So the father of Helen Myra Greaves (5),
Edward Greaves (10), born in 1845 in Harrogate,
married to Myra Frost (11) in 1883 in Manningham, PP_11
died in 1910 in Manchester, was the son of
John Greaves (20), and PP_20
Ann Catherine Robinson (21). PP_21

PP_20 That John Greaves (20) was the father of Edward Greaves (10) PP_10

John Greaves and Anne Catherine Robinson were married in 1843 in York, when his age is given as 'full'. Census
John Greaves is listed in the 1851 census aged 41 and born (c. 1809) in Tadcaster, Yorkshire Birth

The birth record for John Greaves in Tadcaster in 1809 (baptism in 1812 as reported by the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research in York in 1989) is the most useful parish record entry I have ever seen:
John Greaves is confirmed to be the father of Edward Greaves by a DNA match with a descendant of his younger sister Emma. DNA
It gives his father as Samuel Greaves of Tadcaster, grocer,
his paternal grandfather as John Greaves of Spofforth Knaggs [Haggs], farmer,
his paternal grandmother as Mary Hearfield,
his paternal grandmother's father as ? Hearfield of Spofforth, farmer,
his mother as Margaret Helmsley [Hunsley],
his maternal grandfather as John Helmsley [Hunsley] of All Saints, North Street, York, supervisor
his maternal grandmother as Margaret Hopwood,
and his maternal grandmother's father as Mark Hopwood,
My descent from John Greaves is confirmed by a DNA matches of about 25cM with a descendant of his sibling Emma Greaves, and at least 4 matches averaging about 28cm of all descendants of John with all descendants of that sibling. DNA
So the father of Edward Greaves (10),
John Greaves (20), born in 1809 in Tadcaster, PP_21
married to Ann Catherine Robinson (21) in 1843 in York,
died in 1875 in Bradford, was the son of PP_40
Samuel Greaves (40), and PP_41
Margaret Hunsley (41).

My descent from Samuel Greaves is confirmed by a DNA match of about 25cM of my brother's with a descendant of Samuel's sibling Emma Greaves, and at least 3 matches averaging about 14cm of all descendants of Samuel with all descendants of Emma. DNA
So the father of John Greaves (20),
Samuel Greaves (40), born in 1779 in Spofforth,
married to Margaret Hunsley (41) in 1805 in Flamborough, PP_41
died in 1848 in Knaresborough, was the son of

My descent from John Greaves is confirmed by a DNA match of about 10cM with a descendant of his sibling Ann Greaves, and at least 2 matches averaging about 10cm of all descendants of him with all descendants of Ann. DNA
So the father of Samuel Greaves (40),
John Greaves (80), born in 1733 in Spofforth,
married to Mary Hearfield (81) in 1768 in Spofforth, PP_81
died in 1796 in Spofforth, was the son of
William Greaves (160), and PP_160
Rebecca Oates (161). PP_161

died in 1770 in Spofforth, was the son of

Margaret Tate (321). PP_321

PP_320 That John Greaves (320) was the father of William Greaves (160) PP_160
William Greaves son of John Greaves of Spofforth Haggs was baptised in Spofforth on 28 January 1692. Birth
John Greaves and Margaret Tate married in Spofforth on 10 June 1685. Marriage
The will of William Greaves in Ash Hagg, Spofforth in 1686 leaves property to his son John, and mentions his wife Alice.
John Greaves and his wife had 6 children between 1686 and 1697 in Spofforth, including William in 1692.
The will of John Greaves of Spofforth Haggs, yeoman, in 1726 leaves property to his son William. Will
John Greaves, son of William and Alice Greaves, must have been born around 1650, but his baptism record seems to be lost.
So the father of William Greaves (160),
John Greaves (320), born in c1650 in Spofforth?,
married to Margaret Tate (321) in 1685 in Spofforth, PP_321

That is, they had at least 6 children, and had 12 grandchildren in 1686. Will
William Greaves must have been born around 1615, but there seems to be no record of it.
So the father of John Greaves (320),
William Greaves (640), born in c1615 in ?,
married to Alice Sumpster (641) in 1640 in Spofforth, PP_641
died in 1686 in Spofforth, was the son of
Thomas Greaves (1280), and
 (1281).

PP_1280 That Thomas Greaves (1280) was the father of William Greaves (640)
William Greaves occurs in the manor court records for Spofforth for the first time in 1648.
Before this year there are entries for Thomas and Richard Greaves, and in 1642 - Thomas Greaves senior and junior. It is possible that Thomas senior was his father, and Thomas junior and Richard his brothers. However, there had been Greaves in Spofforth since at least 1486, so any relationships would be possible. Manor court records usually don't provide enough information to prove relationships between individuals.
