The records

Introduction I first discovered that this Percy family was among my ancestors in 2002, on finding that Alexander Buchan, the son of Henry Buchan who served in the British army throughout the Napoleonic wars from 1794 to 1816, married Margaret Percy, daughter of Samuel Percy a bleacher, in Glasgow in 1843.
After finding that Alexander's brother Henry married Margaret's sister Sarah a year before in Perth, that Sarah and Margaret were probably baptized in Carnmoney near Belfast in Ireland, and that Samuel and his wife had 4 children in Scotland between about 1826 and 1835, that appeared to be all one could discover - many Irish records having been lost, Carnmoney for instance has no records before 1788.
This situation was transformed in 2019 after taking a DNA test with Ancestry, and finding quite a few 'Common Ancestors' among about 50 of Samuel's descendants, through 7 of his 12 children - confirming that the family moved from Carnmoney to Bonhill in Dumbartonshire sometime between 1822 and 1826.
Then a further 15 or so matches were found with descendants of a Mary Percy (a sister or cousin of Samuel), then a like number with descendants of a Janet Percy (also sister or cousin and likely baptized in Carnmoney), and then around 6 further matches with descendants of an Elizabeth Percy (yet another sister or cousin).
Finally, there are also about 8 matches in a cluster (McBride) clearly related with the Percy family from their DNA, but by which path is unclear.
So, at the moment, about 100 descendants of this Percy family can be attributed, at least roughly, to one of these branches (Samuel, Mary, Janet, Elizabeth, McBride), leaving about another 150 descendants (shared matches with the other 100) unplaceable.
To put this into perspective, have a look at the overview of my DNA confirmation for all branches under the link to the right. Margaret Percy is 4 generations back, to the right of the page with 40 descendants with matches, and her presumed grandfather Joseph with 59. DNA Overview
These various Percy branches, their records and DNA matches are investigated in more detail below.
Note that no details on any branch, aside my own, are included on this website that are less than 125 years old. Please text me is you find that not to be the case! (or have any comments, suggestions or additions). message
An overview of the tracing of the different branches is given under 'Tracing' below. Tracing

A note on the Percy family tree
It is certain from the 1861 census that Mary Callander born Percy and Elizabeth Swan born Percy are sisters (or at least half-sisters), and Elizabeth and Janet Finnegan born Percy are also sisters, or at least half-sisters, daughters of James Percy, according to their death certificates. In Samuel's death certificate his parents are given as Joseph Percy and Margaret White, and their first son is named Joseph, so Samuel evidently believed that. This results in the Percy tree (link to the right). Tree
But if that tree is correct, my (and my branch's) DNA matches to Samuel's descendants are somehow slightly lower than my/our matches to Samuel's grandfather's descendants (through Mary). So I'm suggesting that Samuel might be a natural child of James Percy - with Margaret White - so that he would be a full or half-brother of Mary, and half-brother of Janet and Elizabeth (their births in 1788, 1793, 1801 and 1806 would be in a plausible sequence), which would make the strength of our DNA matches (and Elizabeth's descendant DG's matches) somewhat more credible. For good measure, I've also included the McBride cluster as another 'natural' paternal event, which would also help explain MM's strong matches to the other Percy branches, including Samuel's. Please let me know what you think of this idea!! Tree2
There may still be records out there which would show which of these trees is (more) correct, of course… In fact, if anyone is in Northern Ireland sometime and could consult the Carnmoney baptism and marriage records for 1788-1845 in the record office there (PRONI - Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, 2 Titanic Boulevard, Belfast) or photograph them from a microfilm reader, that could be a great help! A transcription was filmed by the LDS about 50 years ago, and one website had free access to another transcription last year, but that has now turned into a paid access - but both have errors, I believe. message

Tracing Tracing the Percys
Descendants of Samuel Percy (son of Joseph Percy)
My ancestor Alexander Buchan, a son of our veteran of the Napoleonic wars, Henry Buchan, married a certain Margaret Percy in Glasgow in 1843. 1843 Marriage
His brother Henry Buchan also married a Percy - Sarah Percy (daughter of Samuel Percy, a bleacher) in Perth in 1842, and she turned out to be Margaret's sister - so we have 2 brothers marrying 2 sisters, which is unusual. 1842 Marriage
These marriages were in Scotland, but the IGI of the time (2003) only listed one possibility - Sarah baptized in 1817, 1817 Birth
and Margaret in 1819, both daughters of Samuel Percy - in Carnmoney, County Antrim, Ireland. 1819 Birth
There were 6 other children of Samuel (Joseph, William, John, Samuel, Samuel & John) baptized in the same place, between 1811 and 1822, and 4 further children (Mary, Jane, James & Elizabeth) born in Dumbartonshire, Scotland between 1826 and 1835, making a total of 12 children of whom at least 8 survived childhood and married.
There things rested for want of records (Carnmoney has no records before 1788, for instance) or new leads, for about 15 years - until I took a DNA test with Ancestry, which changed things dramatically. 2008 Tree
Using DNA results I could find matches to about 50 descendants of 7 of Samuel Percy's children - either directly, or indirectly through other cousins - which confirms my own descent from Samuel, and the same for all of the other 50-odd of his descendants. Tree
As noted on page '29-1 Percy' in the tree in red, I have at least 19 matches averaging 16.8 cM with other descendants of Samuel, and I together with the 5 other descendants of Samuel (who have shared their DNA results with me) have at least 42 matches averaging 18.2 cM with all other descendants of Samuel.
In addition, I have 10 matches averaging 19.2 cM with descendants of Mary, and the 6 of us have at least 31 matches averaging 18.7 with descendants of Mary, Janet and Elizabeth.

Descendants of Mary Percy (inferred daughter of James Percy)
Beside these matches with descendants of Samuel Percy b. c. 1788  and Isabella Jenkins, there were a few other fairly strong matches with descendants of a Mary Percy b. c. 1793, married a John Callander in 1832 in Glasgow, and died in 1865 in New Monkland.
Samuel and Mary Percy were 5 years apart, both born in Ireland according to the census records, and died within 2 years of each other, 1864 and 1865, in or near Glasgow in Scotland, so appeared to be siblings - and as Samuel's parents were listed on his death certificate as Joseph Percy and Margaret White, we assumed that Mary had the same parents. This assumption was soon challenged, though.
As noted on page '29-1a Percy' in the tree in red, 2 of Mary's descendants have at least 15 matches averaging 26.1 cM with descendants of Samuel, and at least 1 match of 20 cM with descendants of Janet. Tree

Descendants of Janet Percy (daughter of James Percy)
My brother and one of our descendants of Samuel Percy have matches to descendants of a Janet Percy who died in the same poorhouse as Samuel - in Springburn, Glasgow in 1868, aged around 70. She was also born in Ireland according to the census records, and her parents listed on her birth certificate were James Percy and Jane Ferguson.
And I then noticed that there was a Janet Percy, daughter of James, baptized in Carnmoney in 1801 (see page '29-1 Percy' in the family tree), who could be one and the same - so probably a cousin of our Samuel.
One of Janet's descendants was quite willing to share his DNA results which included about a dozen of Janet's descendants, including quite a few 'Common Ancestors' (on Ancestry), and between them and the other Percy branches there are at least 15 DNA matches, so Janet definitely belongs to the family.
As noted on page '29-1a Percy' in the tree in red, 2 of Janet's descendants have at least 6 matches averaging 20.8 cM with descendants of Samuel, and at least 3 matches averaging 16 cM with descendants of Mary. Tree
So this Janet Percy could well be the one baptized in Carnmoney in 1801 - which raises the question whether other Percy children baptized in Carnmoney might also turn up later in Scotland - especially James' other children Elizabeth b. 1806 and William b. 1808.

Descendants of Elizabeth Percy (daughter of James Percy)
And Elizabeth could soon be found - she married a George Swan in 1839 in Glasgow, and in 1861 was living in New Monkland with her younger daughter Martha, and living right next door to Mary Callander (born Percy) and Elizabeth Swan her niece (Martha Swan's elder daughter)'.
Elizabeth Swan born Percy died in New Monkland in 1877 aged 72, corresponding to the baptism in 1806 in Carnmoney, and her death certificate gives her parents as James Percy (tick!) and Jean Paterson.
So Janet and Elizabeth were half-sisters, or sisters - if one or the other informant was mistaken - Jean and Jane are essentially the same name, and Ferguson and Paterson could be easily confused, many years after they had died, and if someone was relying on a poorly written record, or from memory.
As noted on page '29-1a Percy' in the tree in red, DG, one of Elizabeth's descendants has at least 3 matches averaging 18.1 cM with descendants of Samuel, at least 2 matches averaging 14.0 cM with descendants of Mary, and at least 3 matches averaging 10.6 cM with descendants of Janet. Tree

Descendants of William Percy (inferred son of James Percy)
To top things off, a William Percy turns up, out of the blue, in the same Springburn poor house in 1871, born in Ireland and aged 63 - so likely the one baptized in Carnmoney in 1808! Where he was between 1808 and 1871, and whether he had any descendants remains a mystery.

Descendants of James McBride & Frances Parker
Among another group of about 8 Percy descendants of a certain James McBride and Frances Parker who married in 1861 in Glasgow includes one, referred to here as 'MM' for privacy, who has at least 14 matches averaging 23.7 cM to descendants of Samuel Percy, 5 matches averaging 15.6 cM to descendants of Mary Percy, 7 matches averaging 7.1 cM to descendants of Elizabeth Percy, and another 30 matches averaging 22.8 cM to other unlocalized Percy descendants.
With such matches this group should be easy to place - but their connection is still unclear.
The tree on page '29-1b Percy' shows James McBride and Frances Parker's parents, and a possible explanation for their descendants having Percy DNA would be that the father of one of the parents married a sister of Samuel and James Percy. Another might be, as already mentioned, that one of their parents was a natural child of James Percy.
As noted on page '29-1b Percy' in the tree in red, MM, one of James McBride & Frances Parker's descendants, has at least 26 matches averaging 20.3 cM with descendants of all the other branches, at least 14 matches averaging 23.7 cM with descendants of Samuel, 5 matches averaging 15.6 cM with descendants of Mary, and  7 matches averaging 7.1 cM with descendants of Elizabeth, besides at least 30 matches averaging 22.8 cM with other unlocalized Percy shared matches. Proofs Proofs
PP_29 That Margaret Percy (29) was the mother of Richard Buchan (14)
Richard Buchan, son of Alexander Buchan, block printer, and Margaret Buchan née Percy [reads Pearson] was born at 7 am 12 July 1857 in Dovecotland, Perth. PP_14
Margaret Buchan's age is given as 31 in the 1851 census, so born around 1820. 1851 Census
Margaret Percy and Alexander Buchan married in Perth in 1843. Marriage
Sarah Percy, daughter of Samuel Percy, bleacher, and Henry Buchan married in Glasgow the year before, in 1842. Marriage
Margaret and Sarah Percy, calico printers, were in lodgings in South street, Perth in 1841 - perhaps due to work, which led them to meet the Buchan brothers, or the families knew each other already, and they were there in view of marrying. 1841 Census
A search of the IGI in 2003 produced baptisms of Sarah in 1817, 1817 Birth
and Margaret in 1819 in Carnmoney, County Antrim, Ireland, daughters of Samuel Percy. 1819 Birth
Margaret Buchan born Percy died in 1863 in England, so her parents were not recorded on her death certificate. Death
Sarah Buchan born Percy died in 1871 in Glasgow, and her parents were recorded as Samuel Percy and Isabella Jenkins. Death
My descent from Margaret Percy is confirmed by at least 19 DNA matches averaging about 17cM with descendants of her siblings William, Sarah, Samuel, John, Mary, and Jane Percy, and at least 42 matches averaging about 18cm of all descendants of Margaret with all descendants of those siblings. DNA
So the mother of Richard Buchan (14),
Margaret Percy (29), born in 1819 in Antrim,
married to Alexander Buchan (28) in 1843 in Glasgow, PP_28
died in 1863 in Liverpool, was the daughter of
Samuel Percy (58), and PP_58
Isabella Jenkins (59). PP_59

PP_58 That Samuel Percy (58) was the father of Margaret Percy (29)
Eight children of Samuel Percy and Isabella Jenkins were baptized in Carnmoney, Antrim between 1811 and 1822. 1811 Birth
Of these Sarah, Samuel and John had Samuel Percy and Isabella Jenkins identified as their parents on their death certificates, as did Mary, Jane and Elizabeth (James' death is untraced), all living with their parents in the 1841 census. 1841 Census
Samuel Percy, widower, died in December 1864 aged 76 (born 1788) and his parents were recorded as Joseph Percy, weaver, and Margaret White. Death
My descent from Samuel Percy (or his father Joseph) is confirmed by at least 10 DNA matches averaging about 19cM with descendants of his siblings or half-cousins Mary, Janet, and Elizabeth Percy, and at least 42 matches averaging about 18cm of all descendants of Samuel or Joseph with all descendants of those siblings half-cousins. DNA
These DNA results are as high for Margaret Percy as for her father Samuel or grandfather Joseph Percy, which does not seem plausible - for matches 1 generation further back it would be surprising, but for 2 generations... very hard to believe.
One of Elizabeth Percy's descendants (DG) has matches to descendants of Samuel (18.3cM), Mary (14.0cM) and Janet Percy (10.6) - higher for descendants of a half-cousin than of a sister, which also seems curious.
Joseph Percy is described as a weaver, and James as a farmer, so it seems unlikely that Joseph was an error for James, for instance. More plausible is perhaps that Samuel was James' natural father, before the latter was married, and that Samuel was brought believing Joseph was his father.
So the father of Margaret Percy (29),
Samuel Percy (58), born in 1788c in Ireland,
married to Isabella Jenkins (59) in 1810c in Ireland, PP_59
died in 1864 in Bonhill, was the son of
Joseph Percy (116), and PP_116
Margaret White (117).

PP_116 That Joseph Percy (116) was the father of Samuel Percy (58)
Samuel Percy, widower, died in December 1864 aged 76 (born 1788) and his parents were recorded as Joseph Percy, weaver, and Margaret White.
