Introduction Introduction
The Overview to the right shows a summary of my autosomal DNA results. Overview
Confirmed ancestors are marked with solid red dots.
The red numbers (#1/#2) above each red dot give the number of matches 'confirming' that ancestor - that is, the number of descendants of that ancestor's siblings with matches to:
1st: me or my brother, or in one case a 2nd cousin of ours
2nd: any known descendants of that ancestor.
The first coresponds to Ancestry's ’Common Ancestors' and 'Thrulines', but giving just a count of one's ThruLines cousins as if all of them had a suitable tree on the system. The second corresponds to a collection of ThruLines output from all those in one's own branch, giving a fuller count of cousins confirming that particular ancestor.
The black numbers (#1/#2) are the sum of the red numbers for that ancestor plus all of his or her ancestors.
For instance, my grandmother Helen Myra Greaves is confirmed by 40/51 matches - 5 descendants of two of her siblings with matches to me plus 12 matches from her father and 23 from her mother (total of 40), and 5 descendants of two of her siblings with matches to her descendants plus 13 matches from her father and 33 from her mother (total of 51).
Where an ancestor is only confirmed by matches to descendants of one of his or her ancestors, this is indicated with an 'up' arrow.
Where an ancestor seems to have no siblings who left descendants, or only descendants who have not taken a DNA test, this is indicated with a red dash.
The larger the number of matches, the more likely the 'confirmation' of an ancestor is correct (assuming that the trees used are correct) - so Thomas Stayt's confirmation (top) at 1/1 is shaky at best, but might lead to finding further matches.
The value of including matches of nearer cousins is shown by Sarah Jane Carter (left, generation 5) confirmed by 0/4 - so no matches on my part, but quite enough with known cousins. Also for Elizabeth Horrell (9*/21) and Joshua Horrell (4*/20), where I have included matches of my Watts 2nd cousin LK - when relying on my matches alone would have read 1/21 and 1/20 - far less convincing.
In one case so far - Mary Ramsey (right, generation 6 **) there are significantly more matches from a descendant of a half-sibling than from the ancestor's branch, so we use the higher number.
What is not shown is the total number of matches between all known descendants of an ancestor and all known descendants of his or her siblings. This would be more useful, perhaps, but more complicated to calculate. It might also skew the figures somewhat, as they depend on how many cousins in any particular branch have agreed to share DNA results.
Note that this is a work in progress, and the figures change from day to day…
Note that ancestors who are confirmed by DNA are marked with a '✓' sign in the 'Proofs' column on the Main page.

Results My father is confirmed by at least 130/224 matches (all those on the left half of the diagram), and my mother by 180/271 matches - all those on the right half of the diagram.
My grandparents are confirmed by 90/173, 40/51, 51/56 and 129/215 matches respectively.
My great-grandparents (apart from William John Yallop Watts (WJYW) are confirmed by 24/47, 12/13, 23/33, 9/9, 41/46, 53/98 and 71/95 matches respectively.
So far, so good - but WJYW was born and baptized as the son of James Pell Yallop, jun. 1824-1896, and his ancestors the Yallops, Packers, Pells and Norris seem to have left no trace at all (count of 0/0), whereas his wife Jemima Caroline Hudson is confirmed by 29/53 matches.
Having been 'thrown back to square 1' after over 40 years believing in the Yallop paper-trail, it was only in 2023 that I found DNA matches to an Edward Mardon Hawkins (EMH) which nicely fit this gap. My brother and I have 12/15 matches to descendants of five of EMH's children with his wife Ann Perry, 3*/8 matches to descendants of his sister Sarah Hawkins, 9*/21 matches to descendants of his mother Elizabeth Horrell's brother Joshua, and 4*/20 matches to descendants of his grandfather Joshua Horrell's brother William, which, I think, proves that EMH was the natural father of my great-grandfather William John Yallop Watts (* where I have included matches of a Watts 2nd cousin, LK).
Of my other great-great-grandparents, all are confirmed by at least one match except Mary Ann Atkinson (see the Atkinsons - they have proved impossible to trace so far), and Louisa Jones below.
My great-great grandmother Louisa Jones was born around 1835 in Ireland (co. Mayo in 1881 census), but by 1851 in Liverpool, and stated on her marriage in 1855 that her father was Anthony Jones, a farmer (probably from Toomore/Foxford County Mayo, according to Griffith's Valuation of 1855). She is 'confirmed' by 21/27 matches to Noone (especially), but also Quinn and Ruane families from that area (but not Jones), so her real parentage is a mystery - and may remain so due to missing records.
Some fairly distant ancestors are confirmed by DNA:
George Hudson 1764-1816 by at least 13/25 matches to descendants of both of his wives, confirming him, as the common denominator.
Catherine Nevill 1768-1796 by at least 7/13 matches to descendants of her sister Margaret Elizabeth Yarroll born Nevill.
Richard Otter 1722-1785 by 6/21 matches between descendants of his and (I'm quite sure) descendants of his brother Francis Otter (c1730-after 1792).
Possibly Mary Bell 1758- by 3/3 matches to 2 descendants of her sister Ann Bell 1769-1814 married John Knight.
Mary Ramsey 1769- by 1/7** matches between descendants of our ancestor and one of her half-siblings.
