Introduction

Tracing Tracing the Bevans
I had the marriage certificate for John Bevan and Louisa Jones by 1980, so I knew about William Prout Bevan but had little else to go on, and practically no access to any relevant records. A marriage for William Prout Bevan, and a plausible baptism of a John Bevan around 1825 proved impossible to find.
The first real progress was in 1999, when the IGI (which had just become available on the Internet) showed a Prout - Bevan marriage in 1796 - Susan Prout marrying Thomas Bevon in Barnstaple, Devon. M_1796
Soon after, I noticed that the CD containing the 1851 census index for Norfolk (a dry run for the full 1881 census index) also contained the census index for Devon (how things have changed since those days!!).  I bought the CD and found William P. Bevan and his wife Mary Ann both aged 55 in Barnstaple. The census entries show the Bevans in Barnstaple living with lodgers called Nomall and Howard, possibly related, and a possible son Thomas Bevan living with his mother-in-law Sarah Darke , sister-in-law Sarah Darke, and niece Mary Ann Darke. C_1851
Nothing pointed to what the maiden name of Mary Ann, wife of William Prout Bevan, might be. So, in 2005, on the off-chance that investigating the Darkes might lead somewhere, I ordered a copy of the marriage of Thomas Bevan and Mary Ann Darke in 1845. This showed her father as Edward Darke, a gentleman - so likely to have been well off, and someone who might have left a PCC Will - which proved the case. M_1845
In fact, the will of Edward Rolle Darke states that Mary Ann the wife of William Prout Bevan is his daughter, and that Mary Ann the wife of Thomas Bevan was his illegitimate daughter by his second (common-law) wife Sarah Brand (or Darke). So father and son married half-sisters! 1836

Proofs Proofs
PP_15 That Susan Bevan (15) was the mother of Lily Buchan (7)
Lily Buchan, daughter of Richard Buchan and Susan Bevan was born on 9 July 1890 in Everton. PP_14
Richard Buchan and Susan Bevan married in 1880 in Liverpool. M_1880
Richard and Susan Buchan had 3 children by the 1891 census  in Walton-on-the-Hill, including Lily (Libby), Susan is given as aged 32 (born c. 1859), and born in Liverpool. C_1891c
Richard and Susan Buchan had a further 4 children by the 1901 census  in Walton-on-the-Hill. Susan is given as aged 41 (born c. 1860), and born in Liverpool. C_1901b
Richard and Susan Buchan still had 4 children living with them at the time of the 1911 census  in Walton-on-the-Hill. Susan is given as aged 52 (born c. 1859), and born in Liverpool. C_1911
Susan Buchan, of West Derby, died in the fourth quarter of 1927 aged 68 (born c. 1859). D_1927
Susan daughter of John Bevan and Louisa Bevan née Jones was born on 3 April 1859 in Liverpool. B_1859
So the mother of Lily Buchan (7),
Susan Bevan (15), born in 1859 in Liverpool,
married to Richard Buchan (14) in 1880 in Liverpool,
died in 1927 in Liverpool, was the daughter of
John Bevan (30), and Louisa Jones (31). PP_30

PP_30 That John Bevan (30) was the father of Susan Bevan (15)
Susan daughter of John Bevan and Louisa Bevan née Jones was born on 3 April 1859 in Liverpool. PP_15
John Bevan and Louisa Jones were married on 29 October 1855 in Liverpool. John is aged 30 (born c. 1825) and his father is given as William Prout Bevan. M_1855
Louisa Bevan (a seaman's wife - i.e. John is away) has 2 daughters in the 1861 census - Mary Ann aged 3 (born c. 1858) and Susan aged 2. C_1861b
John and Louisa Bevan have 3 children in the 1871 census - Susan aged 11, William aged 7 and John E. Aged 2. John is aged 45 (born c. 1826 in London) C_1871a
John and Louisa Bevan have 3 children in the 1881 census - Susan aged 22 with her husband Richard aged 23, Willis J. aged 15, John E. aged 12, and Sarah E. aged 10. John is aged 55 (born c. 1826 in London) C_1881a
John the son of William Bevan, a cooper and Mary was baptised on 21 August 1825 in St. Anne Limehouse, Middlesex. B_1825
So the father of Susan Bevan (15),
John Bevan (30), born in 1825 in Limehouse,
married to Louisa Jones (31) in 1855 in Liverpool, PP_31
died in 1891 in Liverpool, was the son of
William Prout Bevan (60), and Mary (61). PP_60

PP_60 That William Prout Bevan (60) was the father of John Bevan (30)
John Bevan and Louisa Jones were married on 29 October 1855 in Liverpool. John is aged 30 (born c. 1825) and his father is given as William Prout Bevan. PP_30
John the son of William Bevan, a cooper and Mary was baptised on 21 August 1825 in St. Anne Limehouse, Middlesex. B_1825
Mary Ann Bevan aged 45 and 5 sons, John aged 15, Reece aged 12, James aged 8, Walter aged 6 and George aged 2 are living at Hardawayhead in the 1841 census for Barnstaple along with one lodger. C_1841a
William P. Bevan aged 55, a journeyman cooper, born in Barnstaple, his wife Mary Ann Bevan aged 55 born in Barnstaple, and their son George H. aged 11 are living at Hardawayhead in the 1851 census for Barnstaple along with four lodgers called Nomall and Howard. C_1851a
William Prout Bevan aged 65, a cooper, born in Barnstaple, his wife Mary Ann Bevan aged 65 born in Barnstaple are living at Hardawayhead in the 1861 census for Barnstaple along with three lodgers called Nomall and Howard. C_1861a
Prout B. William', certainly William Prout Bevan, aged 75, a cooper, born in Barnstaple, his wife Mary Ann Bevan aged 75 born in Barnstaple are living at Hardawayhead in the 1871 census for Barnstaple. C_1871a
William Prout Bevan died in 1873 aged 77 in Barnstaple. D_1873
William base child of Susannah Prout was baptised on 13 January 1796 in Barnstaple, exactly one week later than his future wife Mary Ann Darke! B_1796
Two and a half months later Susannah Prout and a certain Thomas Bevan married in Barnstaple on 28 March 1796.William Prout thereby became 'William Prout Bevan' M_1796
So the father of John Bevan (30),
William Prout Bevan (60), born in 1796 in Barnstaple,
married to Mary Ann Darke (61) in 1816 in Barnstaple, PP_61
died in 1873 in Barnstaple, was the son of
Susan Prout (121) and an unknown father. PP_120

PP_120 That Thomas Bevan (120) was the father of William Prout Bevan (60)
William Prout Bevan was baptised as 'base child' William Prout by his mother Susan Prout with no indication of the father's identity. William acquired the surname Bevan when his mother married Thomas Bevan a few month after he was born, so Thomas Bevan was probably NOT his natural father. Unless some evidence of the father comes to light (litigation for support, acknowledgement in a later will, etc.), the male line here is untraceable. PP_60
