Tracing Tracing the Rolles
My mother's mother's mother was Susan Bevan, grandaughter of William Prout Bevan and Mary Ann Darke. And Mary Ann Darke was the daughter of Edward Rolle Darke - the 'Rolle' already pointing to a connection the Darkes were proud of, no doubt. Edward Rolle Darke even had an uncle named 'Rolle' Darke, and he was the son of Roger Darke and Sarah Rolle.
This Sarah Rolle can be found in the Visitation of Devon at the bottom of a pedigree which stretches back through Robert Rolle, Maurice Rolle, Edward Rolle, another Maurice Rolle, to George Rolle who was a lawyer and court official in the reign of Henry VIII, and who made a fortune out of his office of 'Keeper of the records of the Common Pleas', his clients in legal matters (especially Edward Plantagenet, Lord Lisle, Lady Lisle, and Honor Basset), and land transactions - particulary those arising from the dissolution of the monasteries. V_1620
George Rolle's career is written up in the History of Parliament published in 1982, and on-line. HoP
Tracing the Rolles therefore consisted mostly of trying to confirm the information in the Visitation and the History of Parliament, and to add detail where possible,.
The main difference, I find, to most websites and the HoP, is with the marriages of George Rolle. The mother of his 11 children was certainly Eleanor Dacres, W_1563
but he would seem to have had 4 wives - Jane Orchard (?-c1518), Eleanor Dacres (c1518-c1543), Elizabeth Ashton (1544-c1551), and Margery (c1552-1552). PP_15648

Proofs Proofs
PP_489 That Sarah Rolle (489) was the mother of John Darke (244)
John the son of Roger and Sarah Darke was baptised in Holsworthy on 19 February 1740. PP_488
Roger and Sarah Darke baptised 11 children in Holsworthy between 1723 and 1745, of which John Darke was the 9th - Thomas in 1723, Honnour in 1725 (dies in 1725), Susan in 1726, Rolle in 1728, Sarah in 1729 (died in 1732), Sarah in 1732 (died in 1745), Roger in 1735, William in 1737, John in 1740, Dennis in 1742 (died in 1750), and Honor in 1745 (died in 1750).
Roger Dark of Holsworthy and Sarah Rolle daughter of Robert Rolle, gent. Married in Meeth, Devon on 10 February 1723. M_1723
John Darke (and his brother Rolle Darke) is mentioned in the will of his uncle Edward Rolle in 1791. W_1791b
Elizabeth Rolle mentions her husband Edward,  her nephew Roger Darke, and her brother Joseph Eyre, in her will of 1791. W_1791a
Edward Rolle and Elizabeth Eyre married in 1755. M_1755
Edward son of Robert Rolle gent. was born in 1703 and baptised in Merton, near Meeth, Devon. B_1703
Sarah daughter of Robert Rolle and Margaret was born in 1700 and baptised in Huish, near Meeth, Devon. B_1700
Robert Rolle gent. and Mrs. Margaret Marten married in Meeth in 1699. M_1699
So the mother of John Darke (244),
Sarah Rolle (489), born in 1700 in Huish,
married to Roger Darke (488) in 1723 in Meeth,
died in <1791 in , was the daughter of
Robert Rolle (978), and Margaret Marten (979). PP_978

PP_978 That Robert Rolle (978) was the father of Sarah Rolle (489)
Sarah daughter of Robert Rolle and Margaret was born in 1700 and baptised in Huish, near Meeth, Devon. PP_489
Robert Rolle and Margaret had 2 children between 1700 and 1703, Sarah in 1700, and Edward in 1703.
Their son Edward Rolle had his Sacrament Certificate and was rector of Monkokehampton, Devon in 1732. C_1732
Edward Rolle was a good friend of Joseph Spencer, historian, scholar, author of Anecdotes, who mentions Edward Rolle's parents in a ltter to his mother. L_1732
Robert the son of Maurice Rolle gent, & Mary his wife was born in Meeth in 1656. B_1656
So the father of Sarah Rolle (489),
Robert Rolle (978), born in 1656 in Meeth,
married to Margaret Martyn (979) in 1699 in Meeth,
died in 1735 in Monkokehampton, was the son of
Maurice Rolle (1956), and Mary (1957). PP_1956

PP_1956 That Maurice Rolle (1956) was the father of Robert Rolle (978)
Robert the son of Maurice Rolle gent, & Mary his wife was born in Meeth in 1656. PP_978
Maurice Rolle and Mary had at leat 2 children, Robert in 1656 and Thomas in 1664, both baptised in Meet. B_1656
Mary the wife of Maurice Rolle died in Meeth in 1695. D_1695
Maurice Rolle died in Meeth in 1696. D_1696
Maurice Rolle left a will in 1696 which was lost to in WW2. W_1696
Maurice Rolle, esq., son and heir of Edward Rolle, esq., deceased was named as a feoffee in Cornwall in 1648. L_1648
Maurice Rolle, son and heir of Edward Rolle, esq., deceased was named as a feoffee in Cornwall in 1649. L_1649
Edward Rolle was reported as alive in the 1620 Visitation of Devon, married to Agnes Crymes, with a son Maurice aged 3. V_1620a
So the father of Robert Rolle (978),
Maurice Rolle (1956), born in  c1617 in Meeth,
married to Mary ? (1957) in c1655 in ?,
died in 1696 in Meeth, bur. Merton, was the son of
Edward Rolle (3912), and Agnes Crymes (3913). PP_3912

PP_3912 That Edward Rolle (3912) was the father of Maurice Rolle (1956)
Edward Rolle was reported as alive in the 1620 Visitation of Devon, married to Agnes Crymes, with a son Maurice aged 3. PP_1956
Edward Rolle and Agnes Crymes had 3 children by 1620, Sara, Joane, and Maurice aged 3. V_1620a
Agnes Crymes was mentioned in her father Philip's will in 1595 as the eldest of 4 daughters, so could hardly have been born later than 1590. W_1595
Edward Rolle and Agnes Crymes were probably married around 1610.
Edward Rolle of Meeth was buried in Plymouth in 1643. D_1643
Edward Rolle is mentioned in the will of Maurice Rolle of 1605, along with his mother Margaret, and the parish of Meeth - confirming the information in the Visitation of 1620. W_1605
Of Maurice Rolle's children in 1605, only Edward and Richard are aged over 21, so Edward was probaby born around 1575.
So the father of Maurice Rolle (1956),
Edward Rolle (3912), born in c1575 in ?,
married to Agnes Crymes (3913) in c1610 in ?,
died in 1643 in Plymouth, was the son of
Maurice Rolle (7824), and Margaret (7825). PP_7824

PP_7824 That Maurice Rolle (7824) was the father of Edward Rolle (3912)
Edward son of Maurice Rolle and Margaret was probaby born around 1575. PP_3912
Maurice Roll of Stockleigh and Margaret had 6 surviving children in 1605: Edward and Richard aged over 21, and Henry, Mary, Margaret and John aged under 21. W_1605
Maurice Rolle married Margaret daughter of ? Brier of Harrow on the Hill, Middlesex according to the information from their son Edward in 1620. This marriage must have been around 1670. V_1620a
Maurice Rolle was owed £100 by Francis Clyfford and Anthony Wright,, brother servant of the Earl of Cumberland respectively in 1584. A_1584
Morris Rolle is named as the 6th son of George Rolle (my brother Rolle) in the will of Anne Pakington in 1563. She mentions 4 daughters, and we know of a fifth from George Rolle's will - so George could be the 9th or 10th child of his parents. Anne Pakington née Dacres was the sister of Eleanor Dacres, so Maurice's parents were George Rolle and Eleanor Dacres. W_1563
The eldest son of George Rolle, John Rolle, was born in 1519, so Maurice as the 9th or 10th child must have been born around, say, 1537. B_1519
So the father of Edward Rolle (3912),
Maurice Rolle (7824), born in c1537 in ?,
married to Margaret Brier (7825) in c1570 in ?,
died in 1604c in Stockleigh, was the son of
George Rolle (15648), and Eleanor Dacres (15649). PP_15648

PP_15648 That George Rolle (15648) was the father of Maurice Rolle (7824)
Maurice son of George Rolle and Eleanor née Dacres was born around 1537. PP_7824
George Rolle and Eleanor had at least 11 children between 1519 and around 1540.
George Rolle remarried in 1544, so Eleanor must have died around 1543. M_1544
George Rolle appears to have had another wife, Jane Orchard, who died before her father, who died in 1519. There was no issue from this marriage, as her father's heir was his nephew Lawrence Prous. I_1519
George Rolle died in 1552 and was survived by a fourth wife, Margery, who he may have married only about 6 months before his death. I_1553
George Rolle was installed as Keeper of the records of the Common Pleas, for life, in 1523. A_1523
George Rolle first appears in the records in a legal dispute around 1515. L_1515
This would mean that he is likely to have been at least 25 at the time, so born before 1490.
George Rolle's parentage is unknown.
He did, though, name his eldest son John, and his eldest daughter Christian (or Christine). W_1563
This might have something to do with a certain John Rolle gentleman of London and his wife Christine who were involved in a dispute in 1576, though I have found nothing to say that they had children. Christine was the widow of John Drayton, citizen and mercer of London. L_1476
Or, the same or another John Rolle in Devon in the 1480s, and Isabel his wife, and Isabel his daughter, wife of John Berehouse. L_1515
Or, the George Rolle who witnessed a document in 1486 involving a John Ford ('our' George Rolle's son John married a Ford) might be his father. A_1486
So the father of Maurice Rolle (7824),
George Rolle (15648), born in c1480 in ?,
married to Eleanor Dacres (15649) in c1516 in ?,
died in 1552 in Stevenstone, was, possibly, the son of
John Rolle (31296), and Isabel (31297).

I_1519 1519 Inquisition Post Mortem (11 Hen. VIII, Ser. II, Vol. 34 (85)) Family (15648)
William Orchard, Bampton, Devon
next heir, Lawrence Prouz, son of Joan, William's sister
CRW: from the above dispute we known that a certain George Rolle with a connection to Devon (which can only be 'our' George Rolle) had a wife Jane, daughter of William Orchard. A_1518a
William Orchard was the heir of John Orchard and Joan Calverleigh. I_1491
As William Orchard's heir when he died was the son of his sister, his daughter Joan must have already died leaving no heir herself, otherwise her child would be the heir, or a proviso would have been included for any future child of Jane. A_1518b
That is, Jane Orchard was George Rolle's first wife, and she died before 1519.

559. John Husee to Lady Lisle.
Mr. Basset is merry, and learns like a diligent student. I have shown Mr. Danastre that my Lord and you will retain him of your counsel at 40s. fee. If your book of the indenture had been here, we might have known ere this what might have been done in the extremity. Let it be sent with all speed—at least that I may have it at Dover. George Rolle wrote his mind to you and my Lord, but the surest way would be to redeem the lands and take it in fee-farm. Lord Daubny may sell wood at Bekynholt and Warham as he pleases, and your Ladyship has the annuity of 26s. 8d. Geo. Rolle will do his best to find the office. I have been at lord Dawbney's several times, but cannot yet meet with Seller. Your Ladyship's woman has made me half a grant. I think she will be with you by Easter. And where the lady Whetehill has behaved so unlike a gentlewoman towards my Lord and you, I never expected other, for dissimulation and cloaked malice cannot be long hidden; but they will certainly be disappointed. I would have sent your kirtle by Fyssher, but Worley (fn. 1) would not deliver it till he hear from you. I cannot tell what he means. Touching all other matters I hope to write from Dover. London, 26 March.

R. O. 1263. GEORGE ROLLE to LORD LISLE.
Lord Daubeney has sent him a message that if Lisle will suffer him to sell and fell Warham wood, he will not meddie with Bekynholte wood. Thinks, however, Lisle had better provide for him 40l. or 50l., which Roger Gifford says would satisfy him, letting him have at least 20l.in hand, with a gentle letter. Intends to go into Devon on St. Anne's day. London, 13 July.

George Rolle, one of the many successful Tudor lawyers, bought the Stevenstone estate shortly before 1524, and built himself "a right fair house of brick" (Leland) which was probably completed by 1539 when we find him writing to Lady Lisle from "my poor house" of Stevenstone
Greater Medieval Houses of England and Wales 1300-1500: Southern England by Anthony Emery – “Brick was used no earlier than the 1620s at Ince ‘Castle’, but Leland records its occurrence a century earlier when the lawyer George Rolle used it to build ‘a right faire house’ in place of the medieval one at Stevenstone near Torrington”.

He has been over there and seen his father and mother [Robert Rolle, gent. 1656- who married ‘Mrs’ Margaret Marten in 1699 in Meeth] settled in the house which they like mightily, and ‘twill be a great convenience not only for them but a variety too for himself the summers when he is in Devonshire, for ‘tis but nine miles from his cousin’s great house, and he can amble over from one to the other mighty conveniently. L_1752 1752-3 Portrait (Christie’s Catalog, Portrait of John Rolle Walter, 2007) Family (978)
John Rolle, was the second son of John Rolle, M.P. of Stevenstone in Devon and his wife, Isabella Charlotte, daughter of Sir William Walter, 2nd Bt., of Sarsden, Oxfordshire. His ancestor, George Rolle, had bought Stevenstone in the reign of King Henry VIII. Rolle's elder brother Henry, who succeeded their father in 1730, sat, in the Tory interest, as member of parliament for Devon in 1730-41 and for Barnstaple from 1741 until 1748, when he was elevated as Lord Rolle, Baron of Stevenstone. John followed his elder brother to New College, Oxford, in 1729. On the death of his maternal uncle, Sir Robert Walter, 4th Bt. in 1731, he inherited Sarsden and took the name of Walter. He succeeded to the Rolle estates on the death of his older brother in 1750. Rolle Walter was elected unopposed as member of parliament for Exeter in 1754 and retained that seat until 1772, thereafter holding one of the two seats for the county of Devon until his death. A Tory, he is not known to have spoken in the House: he was in the early 1760s a supporter of the government, but voted with the opposition in the parliament of 1768. An observation in connection with the contractors' bill of 12 February 1779 records him as 'pro, absent, query doubtful', and he clearly epitomised the independent-minded country member. He was succeeded by his fourth brother, Denys Rolle (?1725-1797), M.P. for Barnstaple in 1761-1774, whose son John (1756-1842), followed John Rolle Walter as member for Devon in 1780, and was elevated as Baron Rolle in 1796, a year before the father's death. Lord Rolle's heir was his wife's nephew, the Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle, formerly Trefusis: in 1883 the Devon estate was of 55,592 acres.
John Walter travelled in Italy in 1752-3 with his older first cousin, the Rev. Edward Rolle (1703-1791), son of Robert Rolle of Meeth, who had matriculated at New College in 1723 and eventually became Prebendary of Salisbury. Edward Rolle was a friend of the much- travelled Joseph Spence (1699-1768), whose Anecdotes are so informative. The two cousins, presumably after a preliminary visit to Rome, were at Capua en route to or from Naples on 12 November 1752: they lodged at the Casa Guarnieri, Rome, at Easter 1753 and subsequently visited Florence, Padua and Venice, reaching Mainz on 12 July. In addition to securing this previously unrecorded portrait, Walter apparently ordered two landscapes from Richard Wilson, who was then in Rome, the Rome from the Ponte Molle at Cardiff and a Diana and Acteon in a private collection.
As Spence's correspondence establishes, Edward Rolle's party was to be joined at the Casa Guarnieri by the great-nephew of Rolle Walter's grandmother, Sackville Tufton, Lord Tufton, subsequently 8th Earl of Thanet. Others staying there for Easter 1753 included Frederick, Lord North, subsequently Prime Minister, and his stepbrother, William Legge, 2nd Earl of Dartmouth. They and Lord Thanet were also painted by Batoni (A.M. Clark, ed. E. P. Bowron, Pompeo Batoni, A Complete Catalogue of his Works with an Introductory Text, Oxford, 1985, nos. 177, 192 and 195), while Dartmouth too was also an early patron of Wilson. The rediscovery of this portrait makes it possible to identify Rolle Walter as the subject of the related portrait head, measuring 18 by 13? inches at Copenhagen (Statens Museum for Kunst; Clark, no. 290), previously dated circa to 1765. Both portraits presumably date from 1753, and thus are among the group of works which helped to establish Batoni's credentials as the portrait painter most in demand with English visitors to Rome.

1822 History (BHO Parishes: Farringdon - Goodleigh', Magna Britannia: volume 6: Devonshire (1822), pp. 237-50)
St. Giles, or Stow St. Giles
ST. GILES, or STOW ST. GILES, commonly called St. Giles in the Wood, in the hundred of Fremington and in the deanery of Torrington, lies about two miles and a half from Torrington. The villages of Kingscot, High Bullen, and Healand, are in this parish.
The manor of Stevenston, or Stephenston, in this parish, was conveyed by Michael de St. Stephen, in the reign of King John, to Richard Basset. Elias his son alienated it to John De la Lay, whose son John took the name of Stephenston: the heiress of this family after three descents married Grant: a co-heiress of Grant brought this estate to Moyle: Sir Walter Moyle possessed it in the reign of Henry VI. In the reign of Henry VIII. it was purchased of the Moyles by George Rolle, Esq., ancestor of the Right Honourable Lord Rolle, who is the present proprietor. Stevenstone House, which is one of the seats of Lord Rolle (fn. 30) , was taken by Sir Thomas Fairfax on the 16th of February, 1646, he being then on his march to the attack of Torrington: after the successful issue of that attack, he returned to Stevenstone on the 19th. (fn. 31) There is a deer-park at Stevenstone, in which are some red deer.

1822 History (BHO General history: Nobility', Magna Britannia: volume 6: Devonshire (1822), pp. LXXXIII-XCV)
Rolle, Baron Rolle. — The ancestor of Lord Rolle, settled in Devonshire, in the reign of Henry VIII., having made considerable purchases of abbey lands, and among others the manor of Stevenstone, which he fixed on for his residence. Sir Henry Rolle, grandson of George Rolle, Esq., who purchased Stevenstone, married the heiress of Watts, of Somersetshire; his son, Sir Henry, married the heiress of Dennis, of Bicton and Holcombe Burnell, in this county, and had a son, Dennis Rolle, Esq., who died in 1638, leaving an only son, who died in his infancy. Henry Rolle, Esq. of Beam, near Torrington, being a nephew of the first-mentioned Sir Henry, inherited the family estates, but died without issue in 1647, when they devolved on John Rolle, Esq. of Marrais in Cornwall, grandson of George Rolle, (second son of George first mentioned,) who married the heiress of Marrais, of Marrais, and settled at that place. This John Rolle, was afterwards K. B., and many years one of the representatives for this county: he married one of the co-heiresses of his relation, Dennis Rolle, Esq. of Bicton, and at the time of his death, in 1706, was possessed of upwards of forty manors in Devonshire, besides large estates in Cornwall, Somersetshire, and Northamptonshire. His great grandson, Henry Rolle, Esq. was, in 1748, created Baron Rolle, of Stevenstone: dying unmarried, in 1759, the title became extinct: it was revived in 1796, when his nephew, John Rolle, Esq. was created a Peer, by the same style and title. His Lordship's principal seats are at Stevenstone, near Great Torrington, and at Bicton.
Henry, a younger son of George Rolle, Esq., first mentioned, having married the heiress of Yeo of Heanton-Sachville, settled at Heanton, and was ancestor of the Rolles of that place. Robert Rolle, great grandson of Henry, and son of Sir Samuel Rolle of Heanton, married one of the coheiresses of Theophilus, Earl of Lincoln, in consequence of which marriage, Margaret, the only daughter of his son Samuel, who had married Robert Walpole, the second Earl of Orford, became Baroness Clinton in her own right.
Dennis Rolle, younger brother of Robert above mentioned, was settled at Hudscot, in Chittlehampton; his grandson died without issue, and bequeathed Hudscot to the present Lord Rolle's father. Henry, a younger brother of Sir Samuel Rolle above mentioned, was Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench, at the time of King Charles the First's death, and continued in that high office during the government of the Commonwealth; his posterity became extinct after three generations.
Arms of Rolle, Baron Rolle: — Or, on a bar dauncettee, between three delves, Az. charged with as many lions rampant of the first, three bezants.
Crest: — An arm couped, Az. the hand, Or, holding a flint, Proper.
Supporters: — On either side a leopard regardant, Gules, spotted, Or, each crowned with a coronet flory of the second.

C_1732b 1732 Sacrament Certificate (Devon Record Office, Reference: QS/21)
COUNTY OF DEVON - QUARTER SESSIONS: SACRAMENT CERTIFICATES  QS/21  [n.d.]
Arrangement: It should be noted that no clergyman could administer the Sacrament to himself and that it was taken frequently (e.g. by officers of the Excise and Customs) at churches other than their own parish church. As far as possible this fact is shown by the formula "(at ---)".
Administrative history:
Between 1673 and 1828 the holding of public office was open only to members of the Church of England. The crucial test was considered to be that of partaking "the Sacrament of the Lord's Supper", and a certificate of having done so was expected to be submitted yearly by all office holders to an appropriate Court of Quarter Sessions.
Attention is drawn to the group of certificates relating to Foreign Protestants (i.e. Huguenots), having received the Sacrament according to their own rite, see the lists for 1709, 1710 and 1711. These were submitted under legislation permitting foreign nationals to become naturalised.
Contents:
Those certificates for the City of Exeter, over 2800 in number, have been indexed for some time. A start on listing those for the County of Devon, 1684-1775, (over 4000 at a rough estimate) is made here.
From 1673-1683 and in 1685 no certificates service.
QS/21/1776 - 1828 are unlisted.
