Introduction This Frost family starts in 1756 with the birth of David Frost, second son of Thomas Frost of Macclesfield. It covers just two generations, as David Frost's son died childless in 1826. The records cover David Frost's two marriages, and the four marriages of his second wife Martha Cope - all of which are of interest to us as they were both direct ancestors.

Tracing Tracing the Frosts

Q_Cope1 Who was Martha Cope, and where does she fit into the family tree?
The first time I saw the name Martha Cope was in some notes compiled in 1979 by a relative on the Greaves and Frost side of the family, where Martha Cope was noted as the wife of David Frost born 1829, parents of Nancy Frost. 1979 Tree
Some years later, in 1990 - this being the days when one needed an address to find entries in the census records, which were only available at the PRO on microfilm - the 1841 census for Chorlton showed Martha Cope aged 75, and no David Frost - in the family of a Thomas and Nancy Frost. This obviously didn't tally with the notes from 1979 mentioned above... C_1841
Martha Cope was actually aged 79 or 80 when the census was taken in spring 1841, as shown by her death certificate showing that she was aged 83 on the 19th of November 1844 - so born in the year before the 20th of November 1761 - if that age was exactly correct. D_1844
Ten years later, the IGI was available on-line, and showed a Nancy, daughter of David and Martha Frost baptised in Macclesfield in 1802 - as in the notes of 1979, but two generations further back than shown in the tree. The IGI showed that David Frost and Martha Watson married in in 1801 in Prestbury - the parish which includes Macclesfield. The IGI also showed both a Thomas Frost and a David Frost, sons of Thomas Frost, baptised in Macclesfield in 1754 and 1756 respectively. It started to look as it Thomas and Nancy Frost of the 1841 census were the children on the Thomas and David Frost of 1754 and 1756, who looked like brothers. This would make Thomas and Nancy Frost cousins, although they had married. M_1801
Martha's marriage to David Frost in 1801, their daughter Nancy and her marriage to her cousin Thomas Frost, and their wills and family history are documented in the Frost (11) family records. A_1891
Q_Cope2 Was Martha Cope a 'black widow'?
In 2003, the indexes to Cheshire wills were on-line, so I could find the will of John Watson, innkeeper in Macclesfield in 1800, whose wife was Martha. One of the executors of this will was John Howard - and I already knew that David Frost's brother Thomas married a Howard. W_1800
The indexes also led to the will of David Frost, innkeeper in Macclesfield proved in 1808, though he died in 1807. W_1807
A little more digging showed a marriage of Martha Frost with a James Daniels in 1809 in Macclesfield, and also a will of James Daniels, innholder in Macclesfield in 1812. That is, Martha had buried 3 husbands in just 12 years! And obviously there had been a Mr. Cope after that. It looked like she could be a "black widow" - in 1800 she was 39 years old, so could have had several husbands before John Watson - if they each lasted an average of 6 years (!!), and there could have been even more in the 29 years between 1812 and the 1841 census! W_1812
That possibility was mitigated quite soon, as she had married Enos Cope in 1813, so he was actually her final husband. M_1813
But what a husband! The only Enos Cope to be found is the IGI who might fit was the son of Edward and Elizabeth Cope baptised in St. Chad Shrewsbury in 1788. This would mean that Martha, aged 52, married a man aged 25!
And it seems to be true. The will of Edward Cope of Macclesfield in 1826 names his son Enos Cope, his son-in-law Francis Chapman, and his daughter Elizabeth Chapman. Elizabeth Chapman was one of the witnesses of the marriage of Enos Cope and Martha Daniels in 1813. W_1826
And the Commercial Directory for Macclesfield in 1821 shows Enos Cope at the "Pig and Whistle" in Mill Street, and Francis Chapman at the "Swan" in Mill Street. A_1821
Enos Cope was a also boxer - the Handbook to Boxing records that he beat Maltby in a match in 1812. A_1812
And he issued a challenge to Dan Donnelly in 1819, but a match never seems to have taken place, as the latter died in the next year. Challenge
Enos Cope, late of Macclesfield, died in 1834 aged 46. D_1834
Q_Cope3 What was Martha Cope's maiden name, and where and when was she born?
Martha's maiden name was still unknown - there was no document stating it explicitly, or in passing. Only recently have I been able to identify her baptism with reasonable certainty.
First of all, David Frost married his first wife, Mary Foden, on the 17th of April 1785 in Prestbury - witnessed by his younger brother George Frost, and a certain Thomas Holland. M_1785a
On the same day, at the same place, George Frost married Frances Houghton - witnessed by his elder brother David Frost, and the same Thomas Holland M_1785b
Less than a year later, a John Watson married a certain Martha Rowbotham in Ashton-upon-Mersey (close to Manchester) - witnessed by George Frost and Thomas Holland - the same witnesses as David Frost's marriage. This proves, I would say, that Martha Cope's maiden name was Rowbotham. As she is described as a spinster, John Watson was her first husband - so she only had the four husbands we already knew about. So she wasn't a black widow, it appears - but perhaps running a pub around this time was a rough business... M_1786
The most likely baptism for this Martha Rowbotham is that on the 10th of January 1762 in Didsbury, which is less than 6 miles away from Ashton-upon-Mersey, for the daughter of John Rowbotham (spelled Robotham) of Withington (in the parish of Didsbury). This is quite close to the 19th of November 1761 - the latest likely date for Martha's birth, and the baptism could well have been held a little over a month after the birth. This Martha had an elder sister called Dinah baptised in 1757, who was buried on the 12th of February 1781 in Didsbury aged 24. Just 7 months later a certain unmarried Martha Rowbotham had a baby girl named Dinah (presumably after her deceased elder sister) baptised in Chorlton, which is a few miles away from Didsbury. This Dinah was buried in 1785 in Didsbury aged 4, and a year later Martha Rowbotham married John Watson.
The key dates for Martha Rowbotham/Watson/Frost/Daniels/Cope would then seem clear. She was born in 1761 in Withington. She was not married when she had a daughter called Dinah in 1781, but who died in 1785. She married John Watson a year later. He died in 1800 aged 42, and she married David Frost in the next year. She had a daughter Nancy in 1802 when she was 40 years old, and a son David in 1805 when she was 43 years old. Her husband David died in 1807 aged 51, and she married James Daniels in 1809. He died in 1812, and she married Enos Cope in the next year. Her daughter Nancy Frost married her nephew Thomas Frost in 1819. Her son David died in 1826 aged 21. Her fourth husband Enos Cope died in 1834 aged 46. She died in 1844 aged 83.
