M_1495c 1495c Marriage Thomas (71482)
Thomas Lacon and Maria Corbet Maria (71483)
The ‘Visitation of Shropshire’ of 1623 shows Maria Corbet as the daughter of Sir Richard Corbet and Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Walter Devereux, first Baron Ferrers of Chartley, wife of Sir Thomas Lacon of Willey, and mother of Richard, Edward, William, George, Lancelot, Margery, Alice, Dorothy, Jane and Maria Lacon. Visitation
John Burke’s ‘History of the Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland” states that Mary Corbet, daughter of Sir Richard, married Sir Thomas Laken of Willey. Burke
‘The History of Parliament’ entry for Edward Lacon describes him as son of Sir Thomas Lacon of Willey by Mary, daughter of Sir Richard Corbet of Moreton Corbet. HoP Lacon
In his will of 1536, Sir Thomas Lacon refers to his wife as having been buried in Much Wenlock, from which place her body should be moved to be buried with his own in Harley, but he does not mention her name. Will
There is a Lacon brass in the church in Harley, probably for Thomas Lacon’s parents, but no inscription recording their names. Burke
Maria died before her husband, so there was no dower to organize, and there is possibly no other record of her passing.
In fact, beside from the Visitation, and various later histories, websites and books repeating its information, I have not yet been able to find any contemporary document giving her surname, or even her Christian name…
The Visitation, however, does seem to be otherwise quite accurate regarding the children of Sir Richard Corbet and Elizabeth Devereux. It shows Sir Robert Corbet (d. 1513) marrying Elizabeth Vernon, Anne Corbet marrying Thomas Cornwall, Elizabeth Corbet marrying Thomas Trentham (d. 1519), Katherine Corbet marrying George Onslow, Margaret Corbet marrying Richard Clive, and, of course, Mary Corbet marrying Thomas Lacon.
Sir Robert Corbet’s will of 1513 names three of these brothers-in-law, Thomas Cornwall, Thomas Lacon and George Onslow, among his executors. Another executor is George Bromley, first husband of his niece Jane Lacon, she being the daughter of Sir Thomas Lacon and, as we presume, Mary Corbet. W_1513
Thomas Trentham’s will of 1519 names his wife Elizabeth (Corbet), makes his nephew ‘young Roger Corbet’ (son of Sir Robert) one of his overseers, and makes William Egerton another of his overseers. William Egerton would later become the second husband of his niece Jane Lacon. HoP Trentham
As these wills agree with the information given by the Visitation, it seems reasonable to believe that this Mary Corbet did in fact marry Sir Thomas Lacon of Willey around 1495.

I make and ordain Thomas Cornwall, knight, Thomas [Lacon], esquire, Elizabeth, my wife, George Bromley and George Onslowe my executors, and Henry Vernon, knight, and Richard Vernon, his son and heir, overseers… Roger (142966)
