Tracing Tracing the Stayts
Sarah Stayt is shown on the tree compiled by Gert Milner as the wife of John C. Cooke. This I could confirm, see The Cookes. Sarah Stayt was born in Upton near Burford in Oxfordshire in 1795, according to the 1861 census where her age is given as 65. I haven't yet been able to locate a record of her baptism. From John Cooke and Sarah Stayt's marriage bond in 1816 we know for sure that Sarah Stayt's father was Thomas Stayt of Bledington. A year before Sarah Stayt's birth, a Thomas Stayt and Sarah Turner were married in Burford. As John Cooke and Sarah Stayt named their eldest son John Turner Cooke, we can be sure that the above were Sarah Stayt's parents. Frost Tree
Thomas Stayt & Sarah Turner were married by licence on the 27th of October 1794 in Burford, Oxfordshire. The bondsmen were Thomas Stait, yeoman of Burford, and a Robert Greenhalf, yeoman of Burthorpe, Glocestershire. I haven't been able to find any information on this Robert Greenhalf or on Sarah Turner's family, nor even the whereabouts of Burthorpe! Witness was Mary Knollis, about whom I also know nothing. In fact, I have made no progress at all in identifying Sarah Turner's family.
This is as far as I'd gotten around 1990. Finding an Oxfordshire Poll book for 1754, there was a Thomas Stayt of Bledington listed. When friends of ours, the Blockleys, went on holiday in the area (there is a village of Blockley close by), they offered to look around, and came back with notes on gravestones in Bledington as well as the address of the local historian, Mrs. Reeves. We spent a week on holiday in 1992, and visited Mrs Reeves, who showed us some houses formerly owned by the Stayts, provided me information from the parish register, and a copy of a history of Bledington: "The Changing English Village 1066-1914" by M.K. Ashby. This contains many references to the Stayts.
From the parish record it seems clear that Thomas Stayt was born in Bledington in 1757. His parents were Thomas Stayt and Anne Baker.
Thomas Stayt & Anne Baker were married in Bledington in 1756, and Thomas was their first son. The 1770 enclosure map of Bledington shows Mr. Thomas Baker owning land adjacent to the Stayts, so she probably came from that family. I haven't tried to trace the Bakers so far. This Thomas Stayt died in 1804, leaving property in Bledington to his son Thomas as identified above. Thomas Stayt was born in 1729 in Bledington, the son of Thomas Stayt and Mary.
Thomas Stayt & Mary must have been married soon before 1729, but I haven't identified their marriage, nor found out Mary's surname as yet. Thomas Stayt was baptized on the 5th of December 1697 in Bledington. He was the son of Edward Stayt and Elizabeth. Thomas Stayt died in 1784 leaving a will which confirms that he was the father of Thomas as found above.
Edward Stayt & Elizabeth must have been married around 1690, as they had children Elizabeth in 1692, Mary in 1694, Thomas in 1697, Joseph in 1702 and Ann in 1705. Edward died in 1748 and Elizabeth in 1754, so they must have been around 20 years old in 1690. I haven't traced either of their families any further back. Edward Stayt's will confirms that he had a son Thomas who inherited.
Miss Ashby's history of Bledington mentions Stayts back as far as 1553, who are probably ancestors of our branch, or close relatives.
