1649 Enclosure (http://resource.rockingham-forest-trust.org.uk/SiteResources/Data/Templates/1Parishother.asp?DocID=400&v1ID=&docidfile=)
Robert Clipsham, Braybrooke
There were at least four phases of enclosure in Braybrooke (a series of plans following the changing landscape can be downloaded from the left hand side of this page) the earliest taking place around the manorial sites in the village. Further enclosure had occurred by circa 1540 when sheepwalks are mentioned, which may be Flitwell closes in the SW and Ainsborough closes in the north west, both of which had certainly been enclosed by 1647. In 1649 Loatland and Blackland Fields, in the east, comprising 925 acres, were enclosed by agreement by Sir Edward Griffin of Dingley, lord of the manor. Sir Edward had 700 acres of enclosure, Robert Clipsham 88 acres, and the remaining 137 acres were shared between 23 holders in pieces of 1-14 acres. The latter can be identified as the block of rectilinear closes directly to and east of Bush Close. The remaining open fields were reorganised and an area of common allocated in Ainsborough Field in lieu of common rights lost at enclosure. After 3 years eight of the freeholders threw down their banks and hedges and refused to accept their allotments, but the enclosure was confirmed as fair in the Chancery court in 1652.
